Veterans Day and World Kindness Day

This week, we had the wonderful opportunity to celebrate both Veterans Day and World Kindness Day with our students.

For Veterans Day, our students expressed their gratitude by making heartfelt cards, writing notes, and coloring pictures to honor those who have served our country. Thanks to your generous donations of games, socks, and treats, our CAST students were able to deliver these items to Swan Falls Assisted Living.

During their visit, students spent time playing games, sharing jokes, learning about the residents’ lives, and handing out the goodies they had prepared. It was a truly meaningful and rewarding experience for everyone involved — a beautiful reminder of the power of kindness and connection.

Students also chalked the walk at Reed with messages of thanks for our Veterans and their families.

We also celebrated World Kindness Day this week! Students who went above and beyond in showing kindness received a special orange spot as recognition of their positive actions. Each day, four orange spots were drawn, and those students received a special prize. It was wonderful to see so many acts of kindness being shared throughout our school community.

Thank you for your continued support in helping our students grow as caring, compassionate members of our community.

Gratitude 🦃

This month, our students have been reflecting on the many things they are thankful for. Each student had the opportunity to write something they are grateful for on a colorful feather, and together they’ve watched our Reed turkey grow day by day!

In addition, we’ve focused on one gratitude activity each day, helping students recognize and express appreciation for the people and moments that make a difference in their lives.

Our students continue to amaze us with their kindness, compassion, and empathy. It’s inspiring to see how proudly they share what they appreciate — and how genuinely they care for one another.

The School Store is Thursday, November 20th!

We’re excited to share that the school store will be open this Thursday! Students will have an opportunity to visit and purchase items during the school day.

All items will be priced at 50¢ or $1, and each student may purchase up to two items.

Thank you for supporting our school and helping students practice real-world money skills in a fun way!

AVID Elementary: How You Can Support AVID Critical Reading at Home

AVID Critical Reading helps students become active, thoughtful readers who ask questions, make connections, and think deeply about what they read. You can encourage these skills at home with a few simple habits:

1. Talk About Reading
Ask your child what they’re reading and what they think about it. Questions like “What was your favorite part?” or “Why do you think that happened?” help build comprehension and curiosity.

2. Preview and Predict
Before reading, look at the title, pictures, or headings together. Ask your child what they think the book or article will be about. This helps set a purpose for reading.

3. Pause and Think
While reading, stop occasionally to discuss new words, main ideas, or interesting details. Encourage your child to make connections to their own experiences.

4. Summarize and Reflect
After reading, have your child retell the story or summarize what they learned. Talking through key points helps solidify understanding.

5. Model a Love of Reading
Let your child see you reading too! When reading is a regular part of home life, students are more motivated to engage with text.

By using these small but powerful strategies, you’re reinforcing the same critical reading habits your child is developing at school through AVID — helping them grow into confident, capable readers and thinkers.
