In AVID, WICOR stands for Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading. This month, we are focusing on Writing!
Writing is much more than just putting words on paper—it is a key tool for learning, thinking, and organizing thoughts. When students write regularly, they clarify their understanding, retain information better, and develop critical thinking skills across all subjects.
How We Use Writing at School

Focused Note-Taking (Cornell Notes): Students summarize and analyze key concepts rather than just copying text.

Learning Logs & Reflection: Students write quick summaries about what they learned and where they still have questions.

Response to Reading: Writing is paired with reading to deepen comprehension and vocabulary.
How You Can Support Writing at Home
You don't need formal worksheets to help your child become a stronger writer! Try these simple everyday routines:

Ask for Written Explanations: Instead of asking "How was school?", ask them to write down 2–3 sentences about the best thing that happened today or one thing they learned in math or science.

Encourage Grocery & To-Do Lists: Have your child help plan the weekly shopping list or write down the family's weekend schedule.

Practice "Reflective Writing": After reading a chapter or watching a educational video, ask your child to write a brief 2-sentence summary of what happened and why it matters.

Keep a Daily Journal: Provide a notebook where your child can freely write about their interests, goals, or stories without worrying about perfection.

Praise Effort & Ideas First: Focus first on the clarity and creativity of their ideas before correcting spelling or grammar.

Kuna, Idaho (9/14/2026) – Beginning 9/28/2026, Reed Elementary, 1st, 2nd and 5th graders can receive free dental sealants and fluoride varnish on-site at school through Delta Dental of Idaho's Grins on the Go program.
Dental sealants are essential: they fill the deep grooves of a child’s back teeth, where 90% of childhood cavities occur. The fluoride varnish provides extra protection for smooth tooth surfaces.
Grins on the Go clinics take place on-site at schools as part of Delta Dental of Idaho’s Community Outreach efforts.
To receive these FREE cavity prevention treatments, children must attend Reed Elementary and have a signed health history and permission form from a parent or guardian. Permission forms are available at the school.
The Grins on the Go clinic is entirely free—there is no cost, and the program does not bill Medicaid or private insurance.

Fifth grade is fundraising for the end of the year 5th grade celebration by selling buttons designed by Reed students.
All students K-5 are invited to participate but only one design from each grade level will be chosen. Designs can be hand-drawn or digitally created. Please use the circles below for the hand-drawn designs. Please email digital designs to mpholmes@kunaschools.org.
Designs are due by October 14th. Winning designs will be announced on October 19th, and 5th grade students will begin selling them in November.

We are always excited to welcome parents and guardians into our school community! To ensure a smooth and safe environment for everyone, please keep the following guidelines in mind:

Complete the Application: All volunteers must fill out the Volunteer Application on the district website before spending time in classrooms or joining on field trips.
- Plan Ahead for Field Trips: We know field trips are currently being scheduled and many of you may want to chaperone. To participate, you must complete the background check and clear the district screening process at least two days prior to the trip. To prevent last-minute stress or disappointment, please take time to fill out the volunteer application now rather than waiting. We love having our parent volunteers and want to avoid turning anyone away because an application hasn't been processed!

Coordinate in Advance: Please reach out directly to your child's teacher to schedule any volunteer visits ahead of time. Volunteers are utilized at the discretion of each teacher.

Follow SPOT Expectations: We ask all parent and community volunteers to model the same expectations we set for our students and staff.

The end of the school day is an exceptionally busy time in our office. To help us ensure your child is ready when you arrive, we kindly ask for your partnership with early pick-up requests:

Call by 2:00 PM: If you need to pick up your child before dismissal, please call the office prior to 2:00 PM (12:00 PM on Wednesdays).

Allow Extra Time: Students are not always in their main classrooms during the afternoon. They may be at recess, in specials (PE, Music, library, technology), or participating in special school events. Retrieving a student from the playground or a specialist room, having them return to their classroom to gather their belongings, and walking to the office takes time.
Calling ahead gives our staff sufficient time to locate your child and have them waiting for you in the office without causing unnecessary delays for your schedule.

To help students stay focused on learning and to keep their favorite items safe, we ask that personal belongings stay at home. Thank you for supporting your child by keeping school a place for learning and play!

- Safety of your child(ren) is our priority. Please pick up and drop off your child in the designated areas.
- Be patient, especially as we start the school year and the pick/up drop off routines are new to many families. We will have staff to support you and others outside.
- Give yourself extra time to safely drop off/pick up.
- Be patient with other parents/guardians in the drop off/pick up line.
- No drop off/pick up in the bus lane.
- Do not park in the drop off/pick up lane. If you need to park, use a designated parking spot.
- Drop off may begin no earlier than 8:30am.

Pull forward as far as you can. Discuss with your child(ren) the type of car (color, make, model) you will be in at pick up.
- Use designated cross walks to access the parking lot or sidewalks.
- Call the office by 2:00pm if there will be a change in the way your child will normally go home so the teacher can be made aware. (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday) Notify the office of changes by 12:00 PM on Wednesdays.

- Students may not be dropped off prior to 8:30 AM, and do not have supervision on the playground for students until 8:30.
- Students that are eating breakfast at school can enter the cafeteria beginning at 8:30 AM. Students that are not eating breakfast at school should line up by their classroom door.
- Please help us keep your children safe by not dropping them off unsupervised before the allowed times.
- Only students and staff are allowed inside the school gates beginning at 8:30 AM.

To help keep all students, families, and staff safe, we ask that no motorized bikes, scooters, segways, or similar devices be used on campus. Additionally, all bikes and scooters must be walked—not ridden—while on school grounds, including sidewalks, pick-up/drop-off areas, and blacktops. For safety reasons, skateboards, rollerblades, and similar items are not permitted on campus during school hours. Thank you for supporting a safe and welcoming environment for everyone! |
Wednesdays are early release days. This means your students will be dismissed at 1:30 PM EVERY Wednesday. We thank you in advance for planning accordingly for pick up.

Reed is a learning zone. We strive to have uninterrupted instruction time and we want kids to be able to play with each other.
For that reason, we have any students with cell phones turn them off/silence and leave them in their backpacks during the school day (except for medical uses). Smart watches can be used as watches or tools (example: the calculator function), but not as a cell phone (example: texting).
If a student is using their phone or smart watch while on campus, we have them bring it to the office for the rest of the day. If they do it a second time, we have them bring it to the office and keep it there for a parent to pick up.
Please help us protect instruction and social interaction time for our Cheetahs!
