Get Ready for Red Ribbon Week Next Week!

Dear Cheetah Families,

Next week, October 25th–30th, Reed Elementary will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week!

Red Ribbon Week is a nationwide campaign dedicated to promoting healthy, safe, and drug-free lifestyles for our students. Throughout the week, we focus on building positive habits, making good choices, and taking pride in showing strong character—living up to our school expectation to take responsibility.

Theme & Daily Dress-Up Days

This year's theme is "REED STRONG"! We invite all students and staff to show their school spirit and commitment to healthy choices by participating in our daily dress-up schedule:

  • Monday, Oct 26: "RED-y to Live Drug-Free!" – Wear as much red as possible (red shirts, socks, hair ribbons, etc.) to kick off the week.
  • Tuesday, Oct 27: "Lei Off Bad Habits!" – Wear your favorite Hawaiian or tropical gear.
  • Wednesday, Oct 28: "Hats Off to Healthy Choices!" – Wear a fun or silly hat.
  • Thursday, Oct 29: "Follow Your Dreams / Put Bad Choices to Sleep!" – Pajama Day! Wear your cozy, school-appropriate pajamas.
  • Friday, Oct 30: Halloween Costumes! – Wear your Halloween costume to participate in our celebrations and annual parade.

Halloween at Reed!

2026 Halloween at Reed
Class Activities
Teachers are organizing school appropriate class celebrations and will share this information with you. All food items for the class party must be commercially produced.  We cannot accept homemade goodies.
Parade (3:10-3:30)
We will have a school wide costume parade at the end of the day.  2nd - 5th grade students will put on their costumes a few minutes before the parade. Teachers will lead their classes through the parade.  Costumes are not required, but all students will have the opportunity to walk the parade route and see others’ costumes.  At the completion of the parade, students will return to their classrooms to gather their belongings.  Students will be dismissed from school in their costumes.
Costumes
  • Kindergarten and 1st grade only – Students in kindergarten and 1st grade will be allowed to come to school with their costumes already on over their clothes
  • 2nd-5th Grade Students -   Bring in a bag—Do NOT wear to school, unless you can still participate in school activities and specials. (Our dress day for Red Ribbon Week is Halloween Costumes.)
  • Costumes must fit over clothes.
  • Students will put costumes on in the classroom over their clothing before the parade.  Students should practice putting their costume on by themselves at home.
  • Students will be dismissed from school in their costumes
  • Focus on fun, not scary – No blood or gore
  • No makeup, body, or face paint of any kind
  • No “costume masks” of any kind
  • No toy weapons or props
*One of the expectations at Reed is to take Responsibility.  It is important that everyone adhere to the costume guidelines to make this a fun and memorable day!  Please help us ensure that students are responsible for following these rules.   These rules will be strictly followed and enforced.

Reading at School: Active Engagement & Critical Thinking

In the classroom, teachers guide students through structured reading strategies designed to move them beyond simply pronouncing words to truly understanding and analyzing text:
Fountain Middle School Teacher's Programs and Strategies Website - WordPress.com

  • Marking the Text: Students active-read by numbering paragraphs, underlining main ideas, and circling key vocabulary or unfamiliar words.
  • Writing in the Margins: Students jot down questions, connections, quick summaries, or reactions directly alongside the text as they read.
  • Graphic Organizers & Cornell Notes: Utilizing structured templates to pull out main ideas, organize supporting details, and summarize the text.
  • Pre-Reading Strategies: Scanning headings, images, and captions, or making predictions before reading to set a clear purpose.
  • Think-Alouds & Read-Alouds: Teachers model thought processes while reading to demonstrate how proficient readers question, clarify, and synthesize information.

Reading at Home: Supporting Habits & Comprehension

You don't need specialized teaching materials to support active reading at home. Simple daily routines can significantly strengthen your child’s critical reading habits:
  • Ask Active Reading Questions: Before, during, and after reading, ask open-ended questions:
  • Before: "What do you think this book will be about based on the cover or title?"
  • During: "Why do you think the character made that choice?" or "What does this word mean in this sentence?"
  • After: "Can you summarize the main idea in 2–3 sentences?"
  • Encourage "Marking" or Note-Taking: Have sticky notes handy so your child can tag interesting facts, write down questions, or flag unfamiliar words while reading home books or assignments.
  • Model Reading as a Family: Let your child see you read books, articles, or recipes. Reading together or taking turns reading aloud builds confidence and vocabulary.
  • Connect Texts to Real Life: Encourage your child to make connections between what they read and their own experiences, other books, or world events.
  • Explore Non-Fiction & Disciplinary Texts: Encourage reading articles, news items, diagrams, and instructions alongside storybooks to build background knowledge across diverse topics.

Bikes, Scooters, and Wheels

To help keep all students, families, and staff safe, we ask that no motorized bikes, scooters, segways, or similar devices be used on campus. Additionally, all bikes and scooters must be walked—not ridden—while on school grounds, including sidewalks, pick-up/drop-off areas, and blacktops. For safety reasons, skateboards, rollerblades, and similar items are not permitted on campus during school hours. Thank you for supporting a safe and welcoming environment for everyone!

Cell phones and smart devices

Reed is a learning zone. We strive to have uninterrupted instruction time and we want kids to be able to play with each other.

For that reason, we have any students with cell phones turn them off/silence and leave them in their backpacks during the school day (except for medical uses). Smart watches can be used as watches or tools (example: the calculator function), but not as a cell phone (example: texting).

If a student is using their phone or smart watch while on campus, we have them bring it to the office for the rest of the day. If they do it a second time, we have them bring it to the office and keep it there for a parent to pick up.

Please help us protect instruction and social interaction time for our Cheetahs!
